Did you know that there is a new museum opening next year in New York City that will be 100 percent dedicated to LGBTQ+ History? Let’s talk about it.
Welcome to Queer Legacy! My name is Svetlana Harlan, PhD, and I invite you to join me on a quest to uncover queer history.
So, I first heard about the new American LGBTQ+ museum in 2023 when I was myself working in a history museum.
Here’s the museum’s mission statement, if you’re interested. Basically, they’ll be working to preserve and share queer stories from around the country.
Here are their core values, if you’re curious.
You can check out how they got started and who they’ve consulted with as they prepare their collections and exhibits for the public.
The museum had a ceremonial groundbreaking in 2021, operating out of the New York Historical Society. Physical construction of the museum started in 2024 and is in the final stages now.
The American LGBTQ+ museum is set to open in the fall of 2027, with no official date yet. In the meantime, the museum has been doing a lot of community engagement and public history exhibits within the community.
When the museum officially opens next year, I will definitely be making a trip to see it all in person. What about you? Do you see yourself making a visit to the American lgbtq+ museum when they’re officially open?
If you want to learn more about the museum, check them out online at Americanlgbtqmuseum.org.
