@queer.legacy Did you know that the first Pride march took place in Chicago? You’d think it was in New York City, right, since that was the site of the Stonewall Uprising? However, Chicago got a start one day before New York, holding their first march on June 27, 1970, 364 days after the Stonewall Uprising. Welcome to Queer Legacy, where you can join me, Svetlana Harlan, PhD, on a quest to uncover queer history. This video, the history of the very first Pride March, is part 3 of the “First Pride in All 50 States Series.” Check out the other videos if you’re interested in this sort of thing. #queerhistory #lgbthistory #firstpridemarch #chicago #pride

@queer.legacy This is A Quick History of The First Pride March in All 50 States. We’re going from earliest Pride March to latest. That first march in New York City was called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March. For context, the Stonewall Inn, the site of the Stonewall Uprising, was on Christopher Street. The March began at Sheridan Square/Washington Place and went 51 blocks up 6th Avenue to Central Park. This was not a tiny march by any means. There’s still debate about just how many people marched, with estimates ranging from 2,000 to 30,000. But what we know for sure is that there were way more marchers by the end than at the beginning. The bravery of the initial marchers inspired many times their number to join the march by the end. The Stonewall Uprising was the spark, but the real fire of the queer liberation movement took place a year later. The first Christopher Street Liberation Day March transformed queer liberation activism from quiet lobbying into a visible, defiant demand for liberation. @queer.legacy 🌈This is A Quick History of The First Pride March in All 50 States. We’re kicking off this series with Ohio, because that’s where I live and that’s the state I know most about. Buckle up. The first documented Pride march to take place in Ohio happened in Cleveland July 1972, according to Ohio’s first queer newspaper, HIGH GEAR. The newspaper documented a small march that took place in July 1972 with 70 attendees. However, others later claimed it took place in September 1973. If Cleveland’s march did take place in September 1973, that makes Cincinnati’s April 1973 march the first verified Pride march in Ohio. It took place on April 7, and the march started from Washington Park and ended at Fountain Square, so about .6 miles total. According to the press, 75 people attended “without incident.” The group sponsoring the march was called the Cincinnati Gay Community, which dissolved shortly after the event. People are often surprised the Cincinnati held Ohio’s first confirmed Pride march, since it’s considered to be the most “conservative” of Ohio’s three big C cities.
